Rate My Professor Rosey Billington

Dr Rosey Billington is a Lecturer in Linguistics in the School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics within the College of Arts and Social Sciences at the Australian National University. She joined the ANU in 2021. Dr Billington holds a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Melbourne and a BA (Hons) in Linguistics from Monash University. Prior to her appointment at the ANU, she served as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the ARC Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language, based in the School of Languages and Linguistics at the University of Melbourne, with affiliations to the University of Melbourne Phonetics Laboratory and the Research Unit for Indigenous Language.

Dr Billington’s research focuses on the intersection of experimental phonetics and language documentation, with particular interest in languages of the Pacific, Africa, and Australia. Her primary research emphasis is on the phonetics of Nafsan and related Southern Oceanic languages of central Vanuatu. Her doctoral work examined the phonetics and phonology of Lopit, an Eastern Nilotic language of South Sudan. She also conducts research on the phonetic characteristics of English varieties in Australia and on creole languages of the Pacific and Africa. Dr Billington supervises Honours, Masters, and PhD students on topics including the phonetics and phonology of Oceanic languages of Vanuatu, Nilotic languages of East Africa, contact languages in Melanesia, sociophonetics of English varieties in Australia and the Pacific, and phonetic and phonological typology. She has contributed to the development of the Linguistics Roadshow, an educational program for high-school students.
