Pejman Rowshan Farzad is an Associate Professor in the School of Physics, Mathematics and Computing, Physics, at the University of Western Australia. He earned a Bachelor of Applied Physics, a Master of Medical Physics, and a PhD in Medical Physics from the University of Newcastle, New South Wales. His PhD research, titled “Improvement of EPID-based techniques for dosimetry and investigation of linac mechanical performance in advanced radiotherapy,” led to commercialized solutions now used in clinical settings. Following his Master's, he spent eight years in a medical cyclotron facility developing novel techniques for producing medical radioisotopes for diagnostic and therapeutic applications. Pejman joined the University of Western Australia in 2013, becoming the UWA Medical Physics Program Coordinator in 2016. He teaches several postgraduate units in medical physics, including radiotherapy physics, radiation biology and protection, and supervises numerous student research projects. Previously, he served as a Conjoint Medical Physics Lecturer at the University of Newcastle from 2013 to 2016.
Pejman Rowshan Farzad's research focuses on medical physics, with specializations in radiotherapy physics, including linac quality assurance methods for advanced techniques such as IMRT and VMAT, electronic portal imaging devices, cyclotrons and nuclear medicine, internal dosimetry, real-time tumour tracking, stereotactic radiosurgery, CyberKnife, 3D printing applications in medical physics, machine learning in radiotherapy, and quantum computing in medicine. He has published over 140 peer-reviewed journal articles and maintains collaborations with hospitals and research institutions across Australia and internationally. Key publications include “Focal Boost in Prostate Cancer Radiotherapy: A Review of Planning Studies and Clinical Trials” (Cancers, 2023), “Advantages of carbon fibre-reinforced polyetheretherketone over titanium implants in spine SBRT: a phantom evaluation” (Physical and Engineering Sciences in Medicine, 2025), “Comprehensive analysis of peripheral dose in electron beam therapy with a Varian TrueBeam Linac” (Radiation Medicine and Protection, 2025), and “Delineation and agreement of FET PET biological volumes in glioblastoma” (European Journal of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, 2023). His impactful work has garnered numerous accolades, such as the UWA Award for Excellence in Teaching (2021), Faculty Teaching Excellence Awards for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning (2018) and Individual Teaching (2021), School of Physics, Mathematics and Computing Research Impact and Innovation Awards (2023 and 2025), nomination for UWA Safer Community Award (2021), and selection as a 2024 State STEM Educator of the Year tertiary finalist. A Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) since 2021, he contributed to the UWA Academic Quality and Standards Committee (2023-2024) and serves as the UWA Chair of Academic Board's representative on the Board of Studies for Mathematical and Physical Sciences (2024).
