About Roxanne

Dr Roxanne Malan is a speech-language pathologist and postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology at the University of Pretoria. She holds a B Communication Pathology (2012, cum laude), an M Speech-Language Pathology (2016, cum laude), and a PhD in Speech-Language Pathology (2023), all from the University of Pretoria. Her doctoral research, completed under the supervision of Dr Esedra Krüger, Prof Jeannie van der Linde, and Prof Alta Kritzinger, examined swallowing and feeding characteristics in neonates with hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy.

Dr Malan serves as a clinical supervisor in the department and maintains a private practice, Roxanne Malan Speech Therapy. Her clinical experience spans community health settings, academic hospitals, rehabilitation, and private practice, with a focus on communication, swallowing, and feeding intervention for neonates, infants, children under five, and adults. She received the Outstanding Abstract Award at the 2023 International Pediatric Feeding Disorder Conference for her doctoral work. Dr Malan is also a member of a research team developing a low-cost, smartphone-compatible voice screening device to improve access to vocal health services in South Africa. Her research interests centre on pediatric dysphagia and related developmental outcomes.
