About Roy

Professor Roy Judge is Professor (Prosthodontics) at the Melbourne Dental School, Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, University of Melbourne, where he serves as Head of Prosthodontics and Director of International. His academic career at the University began in 1995, with staff appointment in 1997, leading to promotion to full professor. Judge earned his PhD in 2006 and MDSc in 1998 from the University of Melbourne, BDS in 1991 from the University of London, and LDS in 1991 from the Royal College of Surgeons. He maintains a part-time specialist referral practice in Moonee Ponds encompassing all aspects of prosthodontics.

Judge's research specializations include implant dentistry, implant complications, mechanical properties of bone around implants and teeth, and prosthodontics. He is chief investigator for the practice-based research project 'Implant Complications in Practice' and research lead for the Rectangular Block Implant (RBI), aimed at replacing missing teeth for patients unable to receive conventional implants. For the RBI multicentre clinical trial, he received the MDHS Innovator Award in 2024, part of a combined $1 million funding over two years. Key publications comprise 'Fracture resistance of titanium and zirconia abutments: an in vitro study' (Foong et al., Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, 2013), 'Implications of implant framework misfit: a systematic review of biomechanical sequelae' (Abduo and Judge, International Journal of Oral Maxillofac Implants, 2014), 'Evaluation of the fit of CAD/CAM abutments' (Hamilton et al., International Journal of Prosthodontics, 2013), '5-year retrospective assay of implant treatments and complications in private practice' (Wang et al., International Journal of Prosthodontics, 2016), and numerous others in peer-reviewed journals. His PhD research initiated ongoing projects supervising graduate students. Judge has delivered public lectures nationally and internationally on implant dentistry, complications, and bone properties, supported by the Australian Prosthodontic Society, Australian Osseointegration Society, and Australian Periodontal Society. He is affiliated with the Prosthodontic Society.
