About Ruggiero

Professor Ruggiero Lovreglio is a Professor in Digital Built Environment at Massey University in the School of Built Environment. He holds a PhD in Environmental and Land Safety and Monitoring from the Inter-polytechnic Doctoral School involving Politecnico di Bari, Politecnico di Milano and Politecnico di Torino in Italy, awarded in 2016, with studies focused on human behaviour in disasters, pedestrian evacuations and large-scale evacuations.

His research centres on human behaviour in disasters, evacuation modelling and safety training, incorporating technologies such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, augmented reality and building information modelling. He teaches courses in building information modelling, fire engineering including evacuation and pedestrian dynamics, and research methods. Lovreglio is a Rutherford Discovery Fellow for the Royal Society Te Apārangi and a Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University. He serves as Associate Editor for Safety Science and Fire Technology, and as a member of the editorial boards of Fire Safety Journal, Virtual Reality and Journal of Safety Science and Resilience. He is Co-Chair of the International Association for Disaster Reduction and Emergency Management and represents New Zealand in the ISO working group on Fire Safety Engineering. Lovreglio has received the 2022 5 under 35 SFPE award, the 2020 Massey Research Medal – Early Career and the 2020 College of Science Research Award – Early Career. He has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed journal papers and chapters, including a letter to Science.
