Ruolian Fang is a Senior Lecturer in the Management and Organisations department at the UWA Business School, University of Western Australia. She earned her PhD in Human Resources and Industrial Relations from the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota, Twin Cities in 2010, with a dissertation on the social influence of undermining behaviors in the workplace using a social network approach. Fang also holds a Master of Science in Management from the National University of Singapore Business School in 2005 and a Bachelor of Science in Management from Jimei University, China in 2000. Before joining UWA, she served as an Assistant Professor in Management and Organisation at the National University of Singapore Business School. Earlier in her career, she worked as Assistant to General Manager at Changshan Real Estate Company in China. Fang received the 2008 HR Division Best Student Convention Paper Award from the Academy of Management.
Her research addresses the dynamic interplay between individuals and social networks as determinants of employee work experiences and performance outcomes, with interests in social networks, social capital, newcomer socialization, entrepreneurship, workplace interpersonal aggression, organizational justice, and human resource management practices. Key publications include 'Understanding Why and When Coworkers Undermine Employees Who Have Friends in High Places' (Academy of Management Journal, 2026), 'Coevolution of Newcomer Network Structures and Supervisor Support and Undermining: A Latent Change Score Approach' (Journal of Management, 2025), 'Gender and Social Network Brokerage: A Meta-Analysis and Field Investigation' (Journal of Applied Psychology, 2021), 'Down but not out: Newcomers can compensate for low vertical access with strong horizontal ties and favorable core self-evaluations' (Personnel Psychology, 2017), 'Integrating Personality and Social Networks: A Meta-Analysis of Personality–Social Network Relations' (Organization Science, 2015), and 'The Organizational Socialization Process: Review and Development of a Social Capital Model' (Journal of Management, 2011). Fang serves on the editorial boards of the Academy of Management Journal (since August 2016) and Personnel Psychology (since January 2020). She teaches courses such as MGMT1135 Organisational Behaviour, MGMT5508 Organisational Behaviour and Leadership, and MGMT4401 Seminar in Management and HRM at UWA.
