Russell Hassan is a professor at The Ohio State University’s John Glenn College of Public Affairs, holding the Ambassador Milton A. and Roslyn Z. Wolf Chair in Public and International Affairs. He received his Ph.D. with a concentration in organizational behavior and theory from the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy at the State University of New York at Albany, an M.S. from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and a B.S. in Information Systems Management from California State University, Northridge. His academic career includes positions as lecturer at SUNY Albany (2009-2010), assistant professor at Ohio State (2010-2016), associate professor (2016-2021), and full professor since 2021. He served as visiting professor at Aarhus University’s School of Business and Social Sciences from 2021 to 2023.
Hassan's research focuses on public management, examining how leadership and workplace perceptions affect the motivation, performance, and well-being of frontline government employees, especially in law enforcement. He studies social identity, relational dynamics, and their impacts on underrepresented groups' workplace experiences and careers in public organizations. Additionally, he researches racial and ethnic disparities in policing and evidence-based reforms. His influential publications appear in premier journals like Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, Public Administration Review, and Public Management Review. Key works include "Does the Influence of Empowering Leadership Trickle Down in Public Organizations? Evidence from Law Enforcement Organizations" (JPART, 2018, Carlo Masini Award winner), "The Behavioral Public Administration Movement: A Critical Reflection" (PAR, 2020), and "How Empowering Leadership Reduces Employee Silence in Public Organizations" (Public Administration, 2019). Awards include two Review of Public Personnel Administration Best Article Awards (2017, 2022), Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award (OSU, 2021), and multiple Academy of Management honors. He is co-editor of the International Public Management Journal, serves on editorial boards of JPART and Public Management Review, chaired the Academy of Management's Public and Nonprofit Division (2019-2020), and holds various committee roles at Ohio State University, including senate service.
