Professor Ruta Gupta is a Clinical Professor and Head of the Department of Tissue Pathology and Diagnostic Oncology at NSW Health Pathology, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, affiliated with the University of Sydney. She holds the position of Professor of Surgical Pathology at NSW Health Pathology and the University of Sydney, and serves as Clinical Associate Professor in Sydney Medical School within the Faculty of Medicine and Health. Additionally, she is the Lead Pathologist for the Head and Neck Oncology and Thyroid Multidisciplinary Team at Chris O'Brien Lifehouse and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and a visiting scientist at The Kinghorn Cancer Centre. Gupta earned her MBBS and MD degrees, is a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia (FRCPA), and holds a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education. She completed specialist training in anatomic pathology and served as a Fellow at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in the United States before taking up her current roles as a full-time staff specialist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
Gupta's research specializes in surgical pathology, with a focus on head and neck cancers. Her work involves identifying morphologic characteristics, applying immunohistochemical and molecular techniques to improve diagnostic accuracy, and evaluating biomarkers for prognostication and therapeutic targeting in head and neck cancer patients. She has produced numerous widely cited peer-reviewed publications in leading international journals, including 'HN-CLEAR: Head and Neck Consensus Language for Ease and Reproducibility, a multidisciplinary consensus mechanism for head and neck pathology' (Head and Neck Pathology, 2023), 'International consensus recommendations of diagnostic criteria and terminologies for extranodal extension in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma: an HN CLEAR initiative (update 1)' (Head and Neck Pathology, 2025), 'Implementing structured pathology reporting protocol for non-melanoma skin cancers' (Pathology, 2023), 'Determinants of Prognosis in Head and Neck Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma' (2024), 'Comparing Genomic Landscapes of Oral and Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinomas' (Modern Pathology, 2023), 'Programmed cell death-ligand 1 expression in oral squamous cell carcinoma' (Oral Oncology, 2016), and 'Expanding the spectrum of IDH1 mutations in gliomas' (Modern Pathology, 2013). As Chief Investigator, she secured a National Health and Medical Research Council Ideas Grant of $1,033,196 in 2024 for the project 'Tailoring Adjuvant Therapy for Oral Cancer Through BioPrinting.' Gupta contributes to the field as subspecialty editor for Head & Neck and Molecular Pathology at Pathology Outlines since January 2022 and serves on the Board of Directors of the International Academy of Pathology Australasian Division.
