About Ryan

Ryan C. Bailey earned a B.S. in chemistry from Eastern Illinois University in 1999 and a Ph.D. in chemistry from Northwestern University in 2004. Following postdoctoral fellowships at the California Institute of Technology and the Institute for Systems Biology from 2004 to 2006, he joined the faculty of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2006 as an assistant professor. He was promoted to associate professor in 2012 and full professor prior to departing for the University of Michigan in 2016, where he now serves as the Robert A. Gregg Professor of Chemistry. At UIUC, Bailey was recognized with the NIH Director’s New Innovator Award (2007), Camille and Henry Dreyfus New Faculty Award (2006), Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship (2011), and Pittsburgh Conference Achievement Award (2015), among others. Additional honors include the ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry Award in Chemical Instrumentation (2020) and election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (2021).

Bailey’s research in Chemistry focuses on engineering scalable bioanalytical platforms for high-parameter molecular analysis to advance personalized diagnostics, particularly for cancer. His innovations include silicon photonic microring resonator sensor arrays enabling label-free, multiplexed detection of disease biomarkers in complex samples. Notable publications encompass “Label-free biosensor arrays based on silicon ring resonators and high-speed optical scanning instrumentation” (2010), “Label-free quantitation of a cancer biomarker in complex media using silicon photonic microring resonators” (2009), “Synthesis and optical properties of ‘branched’ gold nanocrystals” (2004), and “DNA-encoded antibody libraries: a unified platform for multiplexed cell sorting and detection of genes and proteins” (2007). Bailey’s contributions have profoundly influenced analytical chemistry, bioanalytics, and nanophotonics, as evidenced by his extensive citation record and leadership roles, such as Associate Editor for Analyst. His work bridges fundamental science with clinical translation, fostering new paradigms in precision medicine.
