Dr. Ryan Leick serves as Department Chair and Associate Professor in the School of Aviation Sciences at Utah Valley University, specializing in air transport strategy, marketing, and operations within Technical and Career. He earned his PhD in Air Transport Management from Cranfield University in 2008 and his Bachelor of Science in Aviation Business Administration from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Daytona Beach Campus, in 2003. Dr. Leick draws upon substantial industry experience in airline marketing, distribution, and information technology, acquired from positions at entrepreneurial start-up and long-haul low-cost carrier MAXjet Airways, legacy carrier United Airlines, and privately held niche carrier Aloha Airlines. As a recognized aviation expert at Utah Valley University, he contributes to aerospace education through teaching, research, and initiatives such as the Aviation Policy Seminar in Washington, DC.
Dr. Leick's key publications include the book 'The Airline Business' (2014, Praeger Publishers, co-authored with John G. Wensveen and Darren Prokop); 'The long-haul low-cost carrier: A unique business model' (2009, Journal of Air Transport Management, with John G. Wensveen); 'Fraud Abroad? GDP Per Capita, Online Customer Reviews and Vacation Rental Unit Booking Rates in the Sharing Economy' (2019, Journal of Research in Interactive Marketing, with Jake David Hoskins); 'Utah Department of Transportation Aeronautics Division Aviation Operations Business Use Case Report' (2018, with Alexandra Clark); and 'Balance Utah Feasibility Study' (2020, with Aaron Organ). His commitment to teaching excellence is evidenced by the Captain V.L. Larsen Trans World Airlines (TWA) Award for Teaching Excellence from the University Aviation Association in October 2018 and the Open Educational Resources (OER) Early Adopter Award from UVU Office of Teaching and Learning. He also received the V.L. Laursen Award for contributions to aviation education.
