Rate My Professor Sabine Braun

Professor Sabine Braun is Professor of Translation Studies at the University of Surrey, where she directs the Centre for Translation Studies and co-directs the Surrey Institute for People-Centred Artificial Intelligence. She earned an MA in Translation from the University of Heidelberg and a Dr Phil in Applied English Linguistics from the University of Tübingen. From 2017 to 2021, she served as Associate Dean for Research and Innovation in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Her research explores human-machine interaction and integration in translation and interpreting, technologies in interpreting, video-mediated and distance interpreting, AI-assisted interpreting, artificial intelligence, audio description, intersemiotic and audiovisual translation, virtual reality, and language technologies. With an overarching interest in fairness, trust, transparency, and quality in technology applications for linguistic-minority populations, her work addresses access to critical information, media content, and public services like healthcare and justice. She has led extensive research, including the AVIDICUS projects on video links in legal proceedings involving linguistic-minority participants and interpreters, and the H2020 MeMAD project (2018-2021) on semi-automating audio description for media such as social media. Her insights shape teaching on MA programmes in interpreting and audiovisual translation, as well as professional training for entities like the Metropolitan Police Service.

Braun has authored and edited key publications, including Here or there: Research on interpreting via video link (2018), Innovation in audio description research (2020), and the chapter 'Technology and interpreting' in The Routledge Handbook of Translation and Technology (2019). Other notable works encompass 'Audio Description from a discourse perspective' (2007) and 'Video-mediated interpreting in legal settings in England' (2018). In 2023, she received the John Sykes Memorial Prize from the Institute of Translation and Interpreting for outstanding long-term contributions to the field. She was Series Editor of the IATIS Yearbook (Routledge, 2018-2022), serves as Associate Series Editor for interpreting in Elements in Translation and Interpreting (Cambridge University Press), and sits on the Advisory Board of Interpreting (John Benjamins). Braun contributed to the DIN Working Group on Interpreting Services and Technologies (2018-2021), co-authoring the first standard on remote consecutive interpreting (DIN 8578), and was appointed to the REF 2021 sub-panel for Modern Languages and Linguistics. She has advised the European Council Working Party on e-Justice and other justice institutions on video interpreting, influencing guidelines in Recommendation 2015/C 250/01.
