Honorary Associate Professor Salim Momtaz is affiliated with the School of Science in Environmental Science and Management at the University of Newcastle, Australia, part of the College of Engineering, Science and Environment. He obtained his PhD from the University of London, along with a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Science (Honours) from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Throughout his career, Momtaz has held positions including Lecturer in the School of Humanities at Central Queensland University from 1995 to 1998, Visiting Professor in the Department of Geography and Environment at the University of Dhaka from December 2000 to February 2001, and Visiting Associate Professor in the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, United States, in 2003. Currently, he serves as Associate Professor in the School of Environmental and Life Sciences at the University of Newcastle. His research specializations cover the impact of development projects in both developed and developing countries, environment and poverty issues in developing nations, community participation in environmental decision-making processes, the role of non-governmental organizations in poverty alleviation, climate change adaptation, community resource management, environmental policy and governance, environmental and social impact assessment, poverty and development, and sustainable development.
Momtaz has produced significant scholarly works, including books such as Evaluating Environmental and Social Impact Assessment in Developing Countries (2013, second edition 2018), Experiencing Climate Change in Bangladesh: Vulnerability and Adaptation in Coastal Regions (2016), Climate Change Impacts and Women’s Livelihood: Vulnerability in Developing Countries (2019), Evaluating Climate Change Governance in Bangladesh (2025), Cities in Global Transition: Creating Sustainable Communities in Australia (2017), and Sustainable Neighbourhoods in Australia: City of Sydney Urban Planning (2015). His publications also feature chapters on topics like the quality of environmental impact statements, implementation of mitigation measures in EIA practice, institutional frameworks for environmental impact assessment, community participation evaluation, and climate disturbances adaptation strategies. Additional contributions include studies on women's livelihoods vulnerability to climate change in Bangladesh, perceptions of climate change governance, resilience of fisheries households to climate shocks in Vietnam, and gendered approaches to climate impacts in coastal Bangladesh. Momtaz has been recognized with awards including Research Fellow in 2003 and Rotary Ambassadorial Fellow in 2000, and he is a Professional Member of the Institute of Australian Geographers. His research has advanced understandings of environmental governance and climate adaptation, particularly in developing countries like Bangladesh.
