About Salvatore

Salvatore Salamone serves as Professor and holder of the Phil M. Ferguson Centennial Teaching Fellowship in Civil Engineering within the Fariborz Maseeh Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin's Cockrell School of Engineering. Before his appointment at UT Austin, he was an assistant professor in the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering at the University at Buffalo, State University of New York, and held a postdoctoral position at the University of California, San Diego in 2010. Salamone obtained his Ph.D. in 2007 and M.S. in 2002 from the University of Palermo, Italy.

Salamone's research focuses on structural health monitoring, non-destructive evaluation, ultrasonic sensing methods for smart structures, wave propagation in solids, digital signal processing and pattern recognition, dynamics and vibrations of structural systems, piezoelectric energy harvesting, and resilience of structural systems to earthquakes. He directs the Smart Structures Research Lab, conducting research supported by funding from the National Science Foundation, U.S. Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, Office of Naval Research, U.S. Air Force, Department of Energy, Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Federal Railroad Administration, Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, Texas Department of Transportation, University Transportation Research Center, New York State Pollution Prevention Institute, ExxonMobil, and Chevron. His scholarly output includes over 150 peer-reviewed journal articles and conference publications.

Throughout his career, Salamone has been honored with prestigious awards, such as the 2022 SHM Person of the Year Award presented at the European Workshop on Structural Health Monitoring, the 2019 Department Teaching Award, ASNT Fellowship Research Awards in 2018 and 2023, the 2014 Achenbach Medal for outstanding contributions to structural health monitoring, and the 2011 ASNT Faculty Grant Award. He is an elected Fellow of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing. Salamone contributes to the field as Associate Editor for Structural Health Monitoring: An International Journal and ASCE Journal of Bridge Engineering, and serves on technical committees including ASCE Structural Health Monitoring and Control and ASME Ultrasonics for Mechanical Systems.
