Sam Miller is an adjunct professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham's Collat School of Business, teaching in the Marketing department since 2010. His courses include sports marketing, where students benefit from his real-world expertise, and sessions on personal branding offered through UAB alumni programs. With a Master of Business Administration from UAB in 2003 and a Bachelor of Arts in Advertising and Public Relations from The University of Alabama in 1997, Miller bridges academia and industry seamlessly.
Miller's professional journey at UAB began in 1997 as a student assistant in the sports information office. Over the years, he contributed to the UAB Creative and Marketing Group, developing award-winning advertising campaigns for football and basketball that boosted attendance and engagement. He provided marketing support to various university units, including the Collat School of Business and the School of Public Health. As Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs, Miller innovated promotional strategies, most famously creating the Battle for the Bones trophy in 2006. This extravagant, bone-shaped trophy, linked to a barbecue contest between Birmingham and Memphis, garnered national media attention including USA Today coverage and established a unique tradition for the rivalry.
Today, as owner of Champ Creative Co. in Birmingham, Miller continues to shape branding efforts. His dedication to UAB is demonstrated through his receipt of the 2007 Outstanding Young Alumnus Award, his presidency of the UAB National Alumni Society from 2023 to 2024, his current role as Immediate Past President, and board service since 2015. He holds memberships in the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators and the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.
