About Saman

Saman Maleki Vareki is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and Oncology at Western University. He is cross-appointed to the Department of Medical Biophysics at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry. His research focuses on cancer immunotherapy, including the role of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase (IDO) in tumor resistance to chemotherapy and radiation, biomarkers of response to PD-1/PD-L1 inhibition, and the influence of the gut microbiome on immune modulation and response to systemic therapies against cancer.

Key publications include “High and low mutational burden tumors versus immunologically hot and cold tumors and response to immune checkpoint inhibitors” (2018), “Fecal microbiota transplantation plus anti-PD-1 immunotherapy in advanced melanoma: a phase I trial” (2023), and “Biomarkers of response to PD-1/PD-L1 inhibition” (2017).
