About Samuel
Dr. Samuel Frimpong serves as an Associate Lecturer in the School of Built Environment at the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney), with expertise in Property and Construction. He earned his PhD in Built Environment from UNSW Sydney, MSc in Construction Management from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Ghana, and BSc (Hons) in Building Technology from the same institution. Before entering academia full-time, Frimpong gained 13 years of professional experience as a construction manager and quantity surveyor. He collaborated with government and not-for-profit organizations to advance youth well-being in the construction sector. Frimpong joined UNSW in 2022 as sessional staff and became a full-time academic in 2024. He teaches courses including Construction Materials, Industrial and Infrastructure Construction, Construction Risk, Health and Safety Management, and Construction Risk Management and Business Analytics.
Frimpong's research specializations encompass robotics, artificial intelligence, and the Internet of Things in construction—covering off-site and on-site applications, social robotics, novel materials for robotic use, workforce training, and sustainability—as well as construction health and safety with emphasis on mental health and youth well-being, particularly in the Global South. His contributions extend to built environment education, including education for sustainable development, metacognition, game-based learning, and postgraduate research skills. Key publications include 'Developing and Validating a Positive Mental Health Scale for the Global South Construction Industry: The Construction Industry Positive Mental Health Inventory (CI-PMHI)' (Construction Innovation, 2025), 'Importance of Prefabrication to Easing Construction Workers’ Experience of Mental Health Stressors' (International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2024), 'Promoting Positive Mental Health Among Young Construction Workers: The Role of Theory' (Construction Management and Economics, 2024), 'Domains of Psychosocial Risk Factors Affecting Young Construction Workers: A Systematic Review' (Buildings, 2022), and 'Fuzzy Evaluation of the Factors Contributing to the Success of External Stakeholder Management in Construction' (Journal of Construction Engineering and Management, 2021). With over 589 citations, his work influences mental health interventions and technological advancements in construction. Notable awards include the 2024 Digital Makers Social Impact Award and People’s Choice Award for the PsycheGuard AI chatbot supporting construction workers' mental health, plus a Digital Makers Micro Grant. Frimpong holds roles as Tomorrow’s Leaders Champion for the Chartered Institute of Building Oceania Region and serves on panels for the International Society of Global Health.
