Samuel T. Yuster served as Professor of Engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles. He initiated research on reverse osmosis techniques for water desalination in the 1950s. His work laid the foundation for developments carried out by students Sidney Loeb and Srinivasa Sourirajan, who produced a functional synthetic reverse osmosis membrane from cellulose acetate polymer. Yuster passed away in 1958 at the age of 54.
