Sangita Bista is an adjunct lecturer and researcher at Murdoch University, affiliated with the School of Engineering and Information Technology. She completed her Doctor of Philosophy at Murdoch University in 2019, with a thesis entitled "Environmental impact assessment and optimisation of onshore natural gas production and delivery." Her earlier education includes a Master's degree in Climate Change from The Australian National University in 2013 and a Graduate Diploma in Environmental Engineering from the same institution in 2012.
Dr. Bista's academic interests center on environmental impact assessments, greenhouse gas emissions from shale gas and unconventional natural gas development, sustainability, water quality, environmental pollution, and sustainable development. Her key publications demonstrate this focus. In "Carbon footprint management of unconventional natural gas development in the export scenario" (Renewable Energy and Environmental Sustainability, 2019), she estimated climate impacts of shale gas fracking in Western Australia for export to Japan and China, finding annual carbon footprints of 543-604 MtCO₂e for 20-year development periods, comparable to Australia's national emissions, and emphasized renewables as cleaner alternatives. "Comprehensive Environmental Impacts and Optimization of Onshore Shale Gas Development and Delivery" (Energy Technology, 2019) assessed lifecycle impacts per MJ of energy, reporting global warming potentials of 54-99 g CO₂e/MJ and highlighting marine ecotoxicity, frac water effects, and pollutants like mercury and radon. Additionally, "Cradle to grave GHG emissions analysis of shale gas hydraulic fracking in Western Australia" (Renewable Energy and Environmental Sustainability, 2017) calculated life-cycle emissions from WA's onshore basins at 245-502 MtCO₂e/year over 20 years using life cycle assessment methods. She has served as corresponding author on these works and holds ORCID 0000-0003-4335-9788. Professionally, Bista is Pricing Strategy Analyst at Synergy since 2021, with prior roles as Energy Analyst at Australian Energy Market Operator (2019-2021), Engineer at South32 (2018-2019), and Lead Energy Analyst at Climate Analytics (2017-2019). She chaired a session at the World Renewable Energy Congress 2026 and was a committee member for IEEE i-COSTE 2024.
