Sarah Cook is the Associate Professor and Chair of the Mathematics and Statistics Department within the College of Arts and Sciences at Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas. She obtained her Bachelor of Science degree from Emporia State University in 1992, followed by a Master of Science in 1994 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1998, both from Kansas State University. Since joining the faculty at Washburn University in 1998, Dr. Cook has advanced to her current leadership role, overseeing the department's academic programs, faculty, and initiatives focused on student success in mathematics and statistics.
Dr. Cook is recognized for her commitment to excellence in teaching and learning, having been awarded the Certificate of Teaching and Learning multiple times, including the 2014-2015, 2015-2016, 2020-2021, 2022-2023, and 2023-2024 academic years, as well as the Certificate of Inclusive Teaching and Learning in 2020-2021. In 2008-2009, she received the Student Life Achieving Excellence Award for her contributions to student engagement. Actively involved in university governance, she serves as Chair of the Academic Affairs Committee of the Faculty Senate, leading discussions on curriculum development, program proposals, math pathways, and academic policies. She also represents the College of Arts and Sciences on the Faculty Handbook Committee. Additionally, Dr. Cook promotes mathematics education as the primary contact for the Kappa Mu Epsilon North Central Regional Convention hosted by Washburn University and has organized sessions at American Mathematical Society meetings, such as on the assessment of proof writing throughout the mathematics major.
