Great Professor!
Associate Professor Saurabh Kumar is a Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney and Principal Investigator at the Westmead Applied Research Centre. He earned his BSc(Med) and MBBS (Hons) from the University of New South Wales in 2003, and a PhD from the University of Melbourne in 2013, receiving the Royal Australian Dean’s Award for the most outstanding PhD thesis. His clinical training included registrar positions at Westmead Hospital, a Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship at The Royal Melbourne Hospital, and an Advanced Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, supported by NHMRC Neil Hamilton Fairley Fellowship and National Heart Foundation Overseas Fellowship.
A/Professor Kumar specializes in cardiac electrophysiology, focusing on the mechanisms and management of complex arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, premature ventricular contractions, and inherited arrhythmia syndromes. He serves as Senior Staff Specialist Cardiologist and Cardiac Electrophysiologist at Westmead Hospital, leading the Ventricular Arrhythmias and Sudden Cardiac Death Program. He has performed over 3,000 catheter ablations for AF and over 2,000 for VT/PVCs, implanted over 2,000 cardiac devices, and pioneered advanced arrhythmia services including Australia's first 24/7 ventricular arrhythmia ablation program and rapid-access arrhythmia clinics. His research portfolio includes translational studies on genetic heart disease, AI in arrhythmia detection, and novel ablation techniques, securing over $16 million in competitive grants from NHMRC, National Heart Foundation, and others, such as REMOTE-CARE (NHMRC 2023) and RADIOABLATE-VT (2022). With over 290 peer-reviewed publications, contributions to Zipes' Cardiac Electrophysiology: From Cell to Bedside, and more than 8,000 citations, he has supervised 7 PhD students to completion. Awards include the Ralph Reader Prize (Cardiac Society of ANZ, 2012), Eric N. Prystowsky Early Career Research Award (runner-up, 2014), and Ross Hoenen Award (2019). He holds editorial roles on journals like JACC: Clinical Electrophysiology and previously chaired the Heart Rhythm Council of the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand.
