Scott Swanson is an Associate Professor of Exercise Physiology at Ohio Northern University, with a joint appointment in the Department of Biological Sciences and the Department of Human Performance and Sport Sciences. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Alma College, a Master of Science from Kent State University, and a PhD from The Ohio State University. Dr. Swanson commenced his academic career at Ohio Northern University in 1997, where he developed the Exercise Physiology major and served as its program coordinator until 2020. This program has grown to become one of the largest majors within the Getty College of Arts and Sciences, equipping graduates for professional roles across health, fitness, and allied fields through comprehensive, hands-on experiential learning.
Dr. Swanson's research specializations include exercise performance, exercise testing, and carbohydrate metabolism during exercise, with specific interests in carbohydrates, muscle glycogen, and their roles in exercise performance. He teaches Introductory and Advanced Exercise Physiology, Exercise Testing and Prescription, and Exercise Biochemistry. Over more than 25 years at ONU, he has contributed to substantial laboratory renovations, incorporating advanced equipment for assessments such as body composition, VO2 testing, metabolic carts, and lactate analyzers. Dr. Swanson has advised student research on topics including resting blood pressure and heart rate measurements, body mass index in athletes, and VO2max values in college-aged student athletes. His efforts have fostered a dynamic environment for practical training and scholarly inquiry in exercise physiology.
