Rate My Professor Sarah Curtis

Dr Sarah Curtis is a Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Science at the University of Gloucestershire. She holds a PhD in Human Molecular Genetics from the University of Bristol awarded in 2005 and a BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science from the University of the West of England completed in 2001. In 2024 she earned a Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education from the University of Gloucestershire and became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her research interests centre on human disease with particular emphasis on cancer gene therapy and infectious disease. Current work examines the impact of obesity on immune responses to influenza virus infection and vaccination, focusing on T cell function.

Dr Curtis has an extensive career history including postdoctoral training in molecular biology at the Bosch Institute University of Sydney from 2007 to 2010. From 2012 to 2014 she worked at the Bristol Heart Institute developing adenoviral-mediated gene therapy for late vein graft failure. Between 2015 and 2018 she contributed to research on novel adenoviruses retargeted to ovarian cancer cells at Cardiff University. In 2018 she joined the Cancer Immunology laboratory at Cardiff University leading a team developing a novel vaccine strategy for influenza A virus. She teaches and leads modules including Virology Cell and Tissue Pathology Pharmacology and Toxicology Research Skills and Proposal and Introduction to Biomedical Science. She also leads NHS placements and supervises undergraduate student dissertation projects. Dr Curtis is a member of the British Society for Immunology and the Higher Education Academy.
