About Sean

Sean Pinder serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Finance within the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Melbourne. He obtained his PhD from the University of Newcastle and a Bachelor's Degree with Honours from Monash University. Pinder has been affiliated with the University of Melbourne since 2001, where he has built a distinguished career in teaching and research. Currently, he holds the positions of Joint Deputy Head of Department for Teaching and Learning and Finance Major Coordinator, overseeing key aspects of the finance curriculum and departmental pedagogy.

Pinder's academic interests center on capital raisings, corporate finance decisions, and derivatives. His scholarly contributions include publications such as 'Loss Aversion and High Stakes' in Accounting & Finance (2022, co-authored with Steve Easton), 'Measuring the Price of Australian Water' in the Australian Journal of Management (2022, co-authored with Steve Easton), 'Evidence of Managerial Opportunism in Australia' in the Accounting Research Journal (2012, co-authored with Thu Phuong Truong and Richard Heaney), 'Daily Entry and Exit Triggers for Open Market Repurchases' (2024), 'An Analysis of the Link Between Performance and Effort Requirements in Large Classes' (co-authored with Les Coleman and Jessica Curtis), and 'Anonymous Peer Feedback Within a Large First-Year Finance Subject: The Student Perspective' (co-authored with Assaf Dekel and Miriam Edwards). Pinder has a proven record of excellence in teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including subjects like Principles of Finance (FNCE10002). He co-developed the Faculty of Business and Economics' inaugural Coursera MOOC specialization, 'Essentials of Corporate Financial Analysis and Decision Making,' in collaboration with Professor Paul Kofman. Additionally, Pinder engages with broader audiences through contributions to The Conversation, elucidating complex financial concepts such as the risks of margin lending for share investments and the distinction between return on investment and return on equity, as seen in articles published in 2024. His multifaceted roles and outputs highlight his significant contributions to finance education, research, and public discourse.
