About Seeram

Seeram Ramakrishna holds a PhD in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Cambridge. He is Chair Professor, Xinghua Distinguished Chair Professor, and Director of the iWearables Center in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Tsinghua University, where he serves as a tenured professor and doctoral supervisor. He joined Tsinghua University as a full-time faculty member in 2025. Previously, he was affiliated with the National University of Singapore from 1996 to 2025.

His research integrates cross-fields technologies including nanofibers, smart materials, living materials, sensors, actuators, miniature energy systems, and artificial intelligence to design and develop intelligent wearables. He has made seminal contributions to understanding and enhancing the biological, chemical, electrical, mechanical, and physical responses of nanofibers produced by electrospinning technology, with publications in journals such as Nature, Nature Reviews Methods, Nature Communications, and Matter. He has published over 500 papers in Q1 journals, achieving an h-index of 221 and more than 227,500 citations as of December 2025, and holds over 70 patents. Ramakrishna has delivered more than 500 invited opening speeches and keynote addresses at conferences and events organized by the World Bank and United Nations organizations. He is a recipient of the Chinese Government Friendship Award and Chang Jiang Scholar of the Ministry of Education, China. He is a Fellow or Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, UK Royal Academy of Engineering, Singapore Academy of Engineering, Indian National Academy of Engineering, and several other international academies. Additional recognitions include the CAS PIFI Distinguished Scientist award, multiple honorary doctorates, and the IFEES President’s Award for global vision in engineering education. He has advised tech startups on technological innovation, contributing to the commercialization of research outcomes.
