Great Professor!
Sergio Leon-Saval is a Professor of Photonics in the Faculty of Science at the University of Sydney, holding an appointment in the School of Physics. He serves as Associate Head of School for Strategic Partnerships and External Engagements, Director of the Sydney Astrophotonics Instrumentation Laboratory (SAIL), and Academic Deputy Director of the Advanced Fibre Bragg Grating Facility within the Research and Prototype Foundry. Since joining the School of Physics in 2009, Professor Leon-Saval has focused his research on astrophotonics, pioneering the development of photonic technologies for astronomical instrumentation. His work encompasses specialty optical fibers, photonic lanterns, wavefront sensors, and integrated photonic devices aimed at enhancing observational astronomy, including applications in exoplanet detection, high-resolution spectroscopy, and focal ratio degradation mitigation in integral field units. Collaborations with institutions such as Nokia Bell Labs and the Sydney Institute for Astronomy underscore his contributions to advancing photonic solutions for large-scale telescopes and space missions.
Professor Leon-Saval's scholarly impact is evidenced by an h-index of 49 and over 9,000 citations. Notable publications include 'Real-time Experimental Demonstrations of a Photonic Lantern Wavefront Sensor' (2023, The Astrophysical Journal Letters), 'Focal ratio degradation in optical fibres for the Hector integral field units' (2023, Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society), 'Demonstration of a photonic lantern focal-plane wavefront sensor' (2024, Journal of Astronomical Telescopes, Instruments, and Systems), 'A complex multi-notch astronomical filter to suppress the bright moonlight' (2011, Nature Communications), and 'On-sky Demonstration of Subdiffraction-limited Astronomical Measurements with Photonic Reformatters' (2025, The Astrophysical Journal Letters). He has received the Australian Optical Society John Love Award in 2020 for breakthrough developments in specialty optical fibers and the Knight's Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic in 2020. Professor Leon-Saval contributes to teaching and supervision in photonics and optics within the School of Physics, fostering the next generation of researchers in these fields.
