Professor Shahin Sultana serves as a Professor in the Department of Social Work, School of Social Sciences and International Studies at Pondicherry University. Possessing two decades of progressive experience in teaching, research, fieldwork, research guidance, and administration, she is specialized in Medical and Psychiatric Social Work. Her teaching portfolio includes courses on Psychology for Social Work Practice, Social Policy and Social Welfare Administration, Medical Social Work, and Public Health for Social Workers. Her primary research areas encompass Mental Health and Well-being, Public Health, Children, Adolescents, and Youth. She has engaged in international academic exchanges, delivering invited talks and presentations in South Korea, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, the UAE, and Thailand.
Prof. Sultana's contributions have been recognized with prestigious awards, including the ‘BEST SOCIAL WORK ACADEMICIAN’ for 2022, awarded by Bishop Heber College, Tiruchirappalli, during World Social Work Day celebrations. Furthermore, her co-authored research paper, “Emotional Maturity of Institutionalized Children Living with HIV: A Cross-sectional Study,” received the ISPSW Best Paper Award for Social Work Practitioner in the National Journal of Professional Social Work. Her scholarly output includes significant publications such as the chapter "Training the Social Work Students for the Next Generation: The Role of Academia" in The Oxford Handbook of Power, Politics, and Social Work (Oxford University Press, 2024); “Mental Health in Disaster Risk Reduction: An Evidence Based Review” in Emerging Challenges for Disaster Risk Reduction (Bloomsbury, 2022); and “Social Work - Meaning and Concept, Objectives and Functions” in Introduction to Social Work (Sage Publishers, 2022). Additionally, she co-authored "A Study of Psychological Well-Being of Higher Secondary School Adolescents" published in Educational Administration: Theory and Practice (2024). She has also edited the book “Engaging Youth & Adolescents in Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation” in collaboration with other scholars. Through her multifaceted work, Prof. Sultana significantly influences the advancement of social work education and practice.
