About Shanton

Professor Shanton Chang is a Professor in the School of Computing and Information Systems at the University of Melbourne, where he also serves as Associate Dean (International) for the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology. As a research and teaching academic, his primary research interests encompass information behaviours from a socio-technical perspective, with particular focus on health, business, and educational contexts. He explores information needs and information seeking behaviour, information security and organisational cultures, and utilises qualitative and mixed-methods research methodologies. Chang's research is multidisciplinary and collaborative, often addressing practical challenges in digital health, business analytics, human-computer interaction, and the experiences of international students.

Chang has made substantial contributions to international education through his leadership, research, and service. His work spans recruitment, teaching and learning in diverse cultural settings, career mentoring, and the development of strategies and policies for international education. He has promoted collaborative intercultural engagements implemented globally and conducted research on international students' digital journeys, information behaviours, and wellbeing. For these efforts, he received the North Star Medal of Lifetime Achievement in 2024 from the Society of Transnational Academic Researchers (STAR) Scholars Network, recognising his interdisciplinary research and international collaborations. Additionally, the International Education Association of Australia (IEAA) awarded him the Excellence Award in 2021 for three decades of distinguished contributions to international student wellbeing, employability, and digital behaviours. Chang leads research themes in initiatives such as the Australia-Indonesia Centre for Digital Engagement and has secured research grants from ARC, NHMRC, and MRFF.
