Shelli Hulcombe is a Senior Lecturer in Vocal Studies (Classical, Musical Theatre and Pedagogy) at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Griffith University. As a classical soprano, she has appeared in principal operatic roles and concert performances with many of Australia’s leading state orchestras and ensembles, as well as undertaking international engagements in the UK, Europe, and South East Asia. Her academic background includes completing performance studies at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Griffith University, and furthering her studies at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester. Her qualifications encompass a Bachelor of Music (Honours), Diploma in Music, Diploma in Opera, Graduate Diploma in Music from the University of Sydney, and a Master of Music Studies majoring in Vocal Pedagogy from Griffith University. She is currently completing PhD studies with research interests centred on the use of cross-genre training to improve vocal outcomes for the classical singer.
Hulcombe is a passionate educator of both singers and singing teachers. She serves as an examiner for the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) in Singing, Singing for Leisure, and Musical Theatre syllabi. She held the position of President for the Australian National Association of Teachers of Singing (ANATS) from 2017 to 2021. Hulcombe has presented papers and workshops at leading national and international conferences, and she is in demand as an adjudicator at eisteddfodau and masterclass presenter. Key publications include her 2022 book review, 'Class Voice: Fundamental Skills for Lifelong Singing by Brenda Smith and Ronald Burrichter', published in Australian Voice. Through her multifaceted contributions to performance, pedagogy, and leadership in the vocal arts, Hulcombe significantly influences vocal education and practice in Australia and beyond.
