Dr. Sheng Chen is a Senior Research Fellow at the UWA Institute of Agriculture, The University of Western Australia. He earned his BSc in Biological Science from Hubei University in 1988, MSc in Plant Genetics and Breeding from Huazhong Agricultural University in 1996, and PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the same institution in 2000. His career began as a Research Assistant in Plant Molecular Biology at Hubei University from 1988 to 1994, followed by a Lecturer position in Molecular Genetics there in 2000. He then held postdoctoral positions as a Research Associate in Plant Molecular Physiology at the Institute of Biochemistry and Plant Molecular Physiology, INRA, University of Montpellier, France (2000-2002), and as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Plant Molecular Genetics at the Centre for Environment and Life Science, CSIRO Plant Industry (2002-2005). Since joining UWA, he has focused on advancing plant breeding and stress physiology research.
Sheng Chen's research specializations include plant genetics and breeding, marker-assisted and genomic selection, structural variation and evolution of plant genomes, molecular physiology and genetics of plants under abiotic stress, and gene expression regulation under stress conditions. His work particularly emphasizes canola (Brassica napus) heat tolerance, genetic diversity in Brassica species, and trigenomic bridges for crop improvement. Key publications include 'Time-series transcriptomic analysis of flower tissue during heat stress in heat-resilient and heat-sensitive Brassica napus L.' (Frontiers in Genetics, 2026), 'A Golden2-like transcription factor regulates Brassica napus seed vigor after artificial aging' (Theoretical and Applied Genetics, 2025), 'Proteomic analysis reveals differentially abundant proteins involved in post-pollination responses to heat stress in Brassica napus' (Journal of Proteomics, 2025), 'Genotypic Variability in Root Morphological Traits in Canola (Brassica napus L.) at the Seedling Stage' (Crops, 2025), and 'Phenotypic advantages and improved genomic stability following selection in advanced selfing-generations of Brassica allohexaploids' (Journal of Genetics and Genomics, 2025). He has produced 44 research outputs, including 37 journal articles. Chen has been involved in the GRDC International Visiting Fellowships Program (IVFP) 2023/24. His contributions enhance understanding of abiotic stress tolerance in oilseed crops, supporting sustainable agriculture.
