About Sheunesu

Sheunesu Ruwanza is a Professor and Head of the Department of Environmental Science at Rhodes University. He holds a PhD in Botany and an MSc in Conservation Ecology from Stellenbosch University, awarded in 2012 and 2009 respectively. Prior to these, he obtained an MSc in Environmental Policy and Planning and a BSc Honours in Geography from the University of Zimbabwe. Ruwanza is a Y2-rated scientist by the National Research Foundation and a core team member of the DST-NRF Centre of Excellence for Invasion Biology.

His research focuses on ecological restoration, invasion biology, and plant ecology, including projects on the restoration of old agricultural fields, riparian systems, and the impacts of invasive alien plants such as Eucalyptus grandis, Lantana camara, and Psidium guajava. He has examined vegetation and soil recovery following invasive species removal, as well as socio-ecological effects of invasions. Ruwanza began his career in environmental policy and planning in Zimbabwe before joining the South African National Biodiversity Institute and later Rhodes University. He has contributed to numerous peer-reviewed publications on topics including topsoil and vegetation dynamics, household energy conservation, drought impacts on smallholder farmers, and ecosystem responses to non-timber forest product harvesting.
