Shinichi Sato is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Dermatology at the Graduate School of Medicine, The University of Tokyo. He earned his M.D. from the University of Tokyo Faculty of Medicine in 1989 and subsequently studied at Duke University in the United States. Sato served as professor at Nagasaki University’s Graduate School beginning in 2004 before joining the University of Tokyo as professor in 2009. His academic appointments include leadership of the Department of Dermatology, where he has overseen research and clinical activities focused on dermatological conditions.
Sato is recognized as a dermatology expert and received the University of Tokyo Hospital director’s award in 2021. His career encompasses extensive research contributions in dermatology, including studies on systemic sclerosis and related fibrotic disorders, with numerous peer-reviewed publications. He has held committee and editorial roles in academic dermatology organizations and participated in international conferences. In January 2026, Sato was arrested on suspicion of accepting bribes related to a joint research project; he was indicted in February 2026 and is no longer affiliated with the university as a professor.
