About Silvia

Dr. Silvia Micheli, holding a Bachelor of Architecture from Politecnico di Milano and a PhD from IUAV Venice, is Associate Professor and Program Convener of the Bachelor of Architectural Design at the University of Queensland's School of Architecture, Design and Planning. A registered architect with the Board of Architects in Lecco, Italy, she joined UQ in 2012 following five years of teaching and research at Politecnico di Milano. Her career encompasses extensive supervision of PhD candidates on topics such as urban villages in Ho Chi Minh City, integrated rooftop agriculture for energy efficiency and food sustainability, Scandinavian influences on Queensland architecture, and participatory urban design in Southeast Asia. In 2019, she served as Visiting Professor at the School of Art and Design, Guangdong University of Technology, China. Since 2016, she has secured DFAT funding to support UQ student mobility programs with partners in Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Seoul.

Micheli's research integrates design and architectural history, with a cross-disciplinary emphasis on the 'productive city,' small-scale projects for urban liveability and resilience, and design strategies for urban horticulture to enhance food security. Key projects include her co-design of the Blue Bower Pavilion, awarded the Crossroads Prize at the 2021 Seoul Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism as a manifesto for urban resilience amid COVID-19, and the multi-award-winning One Room Tower residential building (2018) demonstrating city densification. She has received grants including UQ Postdoctoral Research Fellowship (2012-2015), UQ Early Career Researcher Grant (2014-2015), UQ Advancing Women Researchers Grant (2015-2016), and Advance Queensland Women's Research Assistance Program (2021-2022). Prominent publications comprise co-authored books House, Precinct and Territory: Design Strategies for the Productive City (ORO Editions, 2024), Paolo Portoghesi: Architecture between History, Politics and Media (Bloomsbury Visual Arts, 2023), Storia dell'architettura italiana 1985-2015 (Giulio Einaudi Editore, 2013), her solo-authored Erik Bryggman 1891-1955: Architettura Moderna in Finlandia (Gangemi Editore, 2009), and co-edited Italy/Australia: Postmodern Architecture in Translation (URO Press, 2018). She contributes to international exhibitions and catalogues for the Seoul Biennale, Vitra Design Museum, and Alvar Aalto Foundation, maintains collaborations with Triennale di Milano, Centre Pompidou, and MAXXI Museum, co-curates the Enrico Taglietti exhibition at Canberra Museum and Gallery, and serves on the editorial board of Springer's Transnational Histories of Design Cultures and Production series.
