Dr Simon Stone is a Senior Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Endodontics at Newcastle University School of Dental Sciences, Faculty of Medical Sciences, serving as Deputy Head of School and Director of Clinical Studies overseeing clinical aspects of Dentistry and Dental Therapy programmes. A Specialist Endodontist, his qualifications include Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (FDS RCSEd), Fellow of the Faculty of Dental Trainers (FDTFEd RCSEd), Membership in Endodontics (MEndo RCSEd), Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA), PhD from Newcastle University, Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice from Newcastle University, Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery (MFDS RCSEd), and Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) from Newcastle University in 2006. He joined Newcastle University as Senior Clinical Lecturer/Honorary Consultant in Restorative Dentistry (Endodontics) in 2017 and holds an Honorary Consultant position at Newcastle Dental Hospital.
Stone's research specializations centre on endodontics and its interface with acute and chronic dental pain, encompassing management of deep caries, vital pulp therapies, plaque control for gingival conditions, cost-effectiveness of restorations and interventions, aerosol production in dental procedures, and pulpitis management. Notable publications include 'Cost-effectiveness of personalized plaque control for managing the gingival manifestations of oral lichen planus: a randomized controlled study' (Journal of Clinical Periodontology, 2013), 'Dental pain in the medical emergency department: a cross-sectional study' (Journal of Oral Rehabilitation, 2017), 'The management of deep caries in UK primary care: a nationwide questionnaire-based study' (International Endodontic Journal, 2021), 'Model-Based Cost-Effectiveness of Direct Restorations: Amalgam Dominates' (Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology, 2025), and 'Endodontic access cavity preparation: challenges and recent advancements' (British Dental Journal, 2025). He has contributed chapters to Master Dentistry Volume 2: Restorative Dentistry, Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics (Elsevier, 2021), Extra-Coronal Restorations (Springer, 2018), and Harty’s Endodontics in Clinical Practice, 7th Edition (Churchill Livingstone Elsevier, 2016). In recognition of his leadership and teaching excellence, Stone received the Vice-Chancellor's Education Excellence Award in 2024.
