About Siobhan

Associate Professor Siobhan Bourke is a Sexual Health Physician and medical educator in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne, holding the position of Associate Professor, Sexual Health Education in the Department of Rural Health. She serves as Senior Lecturer and Deputy Director of the Centre for Excellence in Rural Sexual Health (CERSH) and as Liaison Physician at VCS Pathology. Her academic qualifications include MBBS (Honours), Master of Public Health (International Health), Graduate Certificate in Public Health (Sexual Health), Graduate Diploma in Clinical Education from the University of Melbourne (2016), and Fellowship of the Australasian Chapter of Sexual Health Medicine (2007). With over 20 years of experience in sexual health and sexual health education, Bourke has developed key training programs, including the initial Pap smear teaching program in 2000 at the Department of General Practice, University of Melbourne, funded by PapScreen Victoria, and the Male Chlamydia Testing and Assessment program in 2009. These initiatives expanded to students from Monash and Deakin Universities, Continence Foundation physiotherapists, breast reconstruction surgeons, nurses (until 2017), and international medical graduates (until 2017). She directs the Sensitive Physical Examination Program (SPEP).

Bourke developed the Sexual Health Across Clinical Contexts (SHACC) discovery stream elective in Melbourne Medical School's MD program, integrating sexual and reproductive health education across three years on metropolitan and rural campuses, covering sexual history taking, STIs, genital anatomy, contraception, complex cases including HIV and transgender medicine, sexual difficulties, and rural health promotion. Her research interests focus on sexual health care education for health professionals, contraception, adolescent sexual health, and cervical cancer. Key publications include "General practitioners' perspectives on promoting sexual health to young men" (2018) and "Young Men or Family Doctors: Who Initiates Sexual Health Discussions" (2017). Awards received are the Norman Curry Award (2004), Royal Women's Hospital Award for Excellence in Education (2004), and her fellowship (2007). She contributes through public lectures and conferences, such as the Asia Pacific IUSTI Conference (2023) on age-appropriate sex education and the 16th ESCRH Congress (2022) on MD sexual health education.
