Dr. SM Zobaidul Kabir serves as an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the School of Environmental and Conservation Sciences at Murdoch University, Australia, a position held since January 2016. He earned his PhD in Sustainable Resource Management, focusing on Environmental Policy and Legislations, from the University of Newcastle, Australia, in 2012. Additional qualifications include a Master of Diplomacy with Merit (2005), Master of Environmental Management and Development with Merit (2004), and Graduate Diploma in Environmental Management and Development with Merit (2003) from the Australian National University; a Master of Demography, first class first (1992); and a Bachelor of Science majoring in Statistics (1989) from the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Kabir's academic interests and research specializations include sustainable rural development, social and environmental impact assessment, project monitoring and evaluation, strategic environmental assessment, climate change, renewable energy, and waste-to-energy technologies.
Kabir's distinguished career encompasses roles in academia, government, and international organizations. He served as Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Strategic Environmental Assessment at the University of Otago, New Zealand, and Kinetic Pvt Ltd, Australia (June 2018–December 2019), and in Sustainable Regional Development at Central Queensland University, Australia (October 2011–December 2014). Currently in Bangladesh, he is Joint Secretary (Sustainable Resource Management), Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock (June 2023–present), following positions as Chief Environmental Specialist, Centre for Environmental and Geographic Information System, Ministry of Water Resources (July 2021–May 2023), and various Deputy Secretary roles in public administration and law. His major publications feature the book Evaluating Environmental and Social Impact Assessment in Developing Countries (2nd Edition, Elsevier, 2018), adopted as a textbook at universities worldwide including MIT, USA. Kabir has contributed numerous book chapters on biofuel production from sugarcane, cumulative impacts on public health, environmental governance in megacities, bioenergy policies, solid waste management toward circular economy, waste-to-energy potential, climate change salinity impacts, renewable energy prospects, and nanotechnology in biofuels, published by Elsevier, Springer, CRC Press, Taylor and Francis between 2013 and 2023.
