Sonia Phalatse is a researcher at the Southern Centre for Inequality Studies at the University of the Witwatersrand. She holds a Bachelor’s and Honours degree in Economics from the University of Cape Town and a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of the Witwatersrand. She is a PhD candidate in the joint Wits–SOAS Programme in Applied Development Economics. Her research interests include feminist economics, feminist political ecology, energy economics and the role of the state in development. Previously, she served as the Economic Justice Lead for the African Women’s Development and Communication Network (FEMNET) and worked as a researcher in the Climate, Energy and Infrastructure and Feminist Economics programmes.
