Soufiene Djahel is a Professor in Connected and Autonomous Vehicles in the Centre for Future Transport and Cities at Coventry University. He earned his PhD in Secure Routing and Medium Access protocols in Wireless Multi-hop networks from Université des Sciences et Technologies de Lille in 2010, an MSc in Networking and Distributed Systems from Université Abderrahmane Mira in 2007 with Distinction, an MEng in Computer Science for Industry from Universite Badji Mokhtar in 2004 with Distinction and recognition as Best Engineer in the Faculty of Engineering, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education from Manchester Metropolitan University in 2017. His career trajectory includes prior roles as Reader in Connected and Autonomous Systems and Senior Lecturer in Cyber Security at the University of Huddersfield, Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at Manchester Metropolitan University, and Engineering Research Manager at University College Dublin. Additional appointments encompass Visiting Associate Professor at University College Dublin until 2025, Invited JSPS Fellow at The University of Electro-Communications in 2022, Business Fellow at Transport Systems Catapult in 2019, and Visiting Researcher at BTIIC, Ulster University in 2019.
Djahel's research focuses on wireless networks including path planning, routing, and task offloading for unmanned aerial vehicles, coordination protocols and safety applications for connected and autonomous vehicles, and 5G/B5G network slicing; cyber security for resource-constrained devices, IoT systems, e-healthcare, and critical infrastructure like smart grids and transport networks; intelligent transportation systems; and smart cities applications in air pollution monitoring, sustainability, and disaster management. Key publications feature 'Path-planning for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles with Environment Complexity Considerations: A Survey' (ACM Computing Surveys, 2023), 'A Scalable Time-Division-Based Emergency Messages Broadcast Scheme for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles in Urban Environment' (Vehicular Communications, 2022), 'A new delay-based broadcast suppression mechanism for efficient emergency messages dissemination in CAVs environment' (Ad Hoc Networks, 2023), and 'AVARS - Alleviating Unexpected Urban Road Traffic Congestion using UAVs' (arXiv, 2023). He leads projects such as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles as a Service in Smart Cities Applications and Cooperative Routing, Re-Routing and Recharge Scheduling for Connected Electric Vehicles. Awards include the FY2021 JSPS Invitational Fellowship for Research in Japan and IEEE Student Travel Grant for Globecom 2009. Djahel contributes as Track Chair for IEEE ICC 2025 and VTC2025-Spring, Guest Editor for IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems, PhD examiner, and reviewer for funding proposals.
