About Soyoung

Soyoung Ahn is a Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison's College of Engineering. She holds a B.S. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from The Ohio State University (2000), an M.S. (2001) and Ph.D. (2005) from the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to her appointment at UW-Madison in 2013, she was faculty in the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment at Arizona State University (2006-2013). Ahn is also the Executive Director of the Mid-America Freight Coalition.

Her research specializes in traffic flow theory and operations, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) applications, and traffic operational impacts on the environment and safety. Research goals include understanding traffic flow fundamentals via observation, experimentation, and statistical methods; assessing environmental and safety impacts; and developing control strategies through ITS. Recent efforts address connected autonomous vehicles (CAVs), CAV platoon control, and system control leveraging CAVs. Notable awards include the NSF CAREER Award (2012), TRB Greenshields Prize (2023), TRB Best Paper in Traffic Flow Theory (2019), TRB Cunard Award (2016), and UW-Madison Vilas Associate (2020). She chairs the TRB Traffic Flow Theory and Characteristics Committee, serves as Associate Editor for Transportation Research Part C: Emerging Technologies, and is an editorial board member for Transportation Research Part B: Methodological. Select publications are "A Deep Long Short-Term Memory Network Embedded Model Predictive Control Strategies for Car-Following Control of Connected Automated Vehicles in Mixed Traffic" (Zhou et al., 2024, IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems), "A strategic approach to handle performance uncertainties in autonomous vehicle’s car-following behavior" (Kontar & Ahn, 2024, Transportation Research Part C), "Reduced travel emissions through a carbon calculator with accessible environmental data: a case study in Madison, Wisconsin" (Bulson et al., 2024, npj Sustainable Mobility and Transport), "On dynamic fundamental diagrams: Implications for automated vehicles" (Jiang et al., 2024, Transportation Research Part B), and "Planning trajectories for connected and automated vehicle platoon on curved roads: A two-dimensional cooperative approach" (Yao et al., 2024, Transportation Research Part C).
