Stefan Bode studied psychology at the University of Goettingen, Germany, and the University of Zurich, Switzerland. He worked at the University Clinic Goettingen in medical psychology before earning his PhD in psychology and cognitive neuroscience from the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences at the University of Leipzig, Germany, in 2010. He subsequently worked at the Florey Neuroscience Institutes and joined the Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences at the University of Melbourne as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in 2011.
Bode received an Australian Research Council Discovery Early Career Research Award Fellowship in 2014. He obtained his Habilitation from the University of Cologne, Germany, in 2017, along with the venia legendi in Psychology. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 2019 and to Full Professor in 2024 at the University of Melbourne. Until 2024, he served as Head of the Decision Neuroscience Laboratory and as Director of the Decision Science Hub from 2018 to 2022. He has held roles including DAAD Research Ambassador, Academic Lead of a bi-national PhD program, and member of the executive committee of the Australasian Cognitive Neuroscience Society. His research examines the cognitive and neural mechanisms of decision-making, including change-of-mind decisions, health decisions, voluntary decision-making, decision errors, and information-seeking. His work has received funding from the Australian Research Council, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the John Templeton Foundation, and has resulted in more than 100 publications in leading international journals.
