About Stefan Th.
Stefan Th. Gries is Distinguished Professor of Linguistics in the Department of Linguistics at the University of California, Santa Barbara, a position he assumed in July 2025 after serving as full professor from 2010 to 2025, associate professor from 2007 to 2010, and assistant professor from 2005 to 2007 at the same institution. Concurrently, he holds the position of Full/W3 Professor (25%, with tenure) as Chair of English Linguistics, specializing in corpus linguistics with a focus on quantitative methods, in the Department of English at Justus-Liebig-Universität Gießen since April 2018. He has also been Honorary Liebig-Professor at Gießen since September 2011. Earlier, Gries was associate professor of English at the University of Southern Denmark from 2002 to 2005 and assistant professor there from 1999 to 2002. His academic qualifications include an M.A. in English linguistics, psychology, and educational science from the University of Hamburg in 1998, a Ph.D. in English linguistics from the University of Hamburg in 2000, and a Habilitation and Venia Legendi in English linguistics from the University of Marburg in December 2024.
Gries specializes in corpus linguistics, statistical methods in linguistics, usage- and exemplar-based linguistics, construction grammar, psycholinguistics, and applications of corpus linguistics to the law. He has authored key books such as Statistics for Linguistics with R (3rd revised and extended edition, De Gruyter, 2021), Quantitative Corpus Linguistics with R (2nd revised and extended edition, Routledge, 2016), Multifactorial Analysis in Corpus Linguistics: A Study of Particle Placement (Continuum, 2003), and Frequency, Dispersion, Association, and Keyness: Revising and Tupleizing Corpus-Linguistic Measures (John Benjamins, 2023). Pioneering collostructional analysis through seminal papers in 2003 and 2004, his research has amassed over 26,000 citations on Google Scholar, with an h-index of 79 and i10-index of 191. Gries co-founded and co-edits the journal Corpus Linguistics and Linguistic Theory, serves on numerous editorial boards including those of Cognitive Linguistics and International Journal of Corpus Linguistics, and is a member of UCSB's Center for Responsible Machine Learning. He has secured grants from the German Research Foundation and Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Sciences, was nominated for UCSB's Faculty Research Lecturer Award in 2025, and has delivered invited lectures and workshops worldwide, including at multiple Linguistic Society of America Institutes.
