Stefan Wilhelm is an Associate Professor and Stephenson Endowed Chair in the Stephenson School of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Oklahoma. His research centers on engineering nanotechnology for the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, with specific interests including biosensors, cancer nanomedicine, immunoengineering and immunomodulation, nanotechnology-biology interactions, and three-dimensional optical imaging. He directs the Biomedical Nano-Engineering Laboratory, which develops nanomaterials for biomedical applications and clinical translation. Wilhelm joined the University of Oklahoma in August 2017 as Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor.
He received his Ph.D. in Chemistry in 2014 and M.S. in Chemistry in 2010 from the University of Regensburg, Germany, focusing on analytical chemistry, chemo- and biosensors. From 2014 to 2017, he served as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering, University of Toronto, Canada. Wilhelm has secured significant funding, including Principal Investigator roles on Oklahoma Center for the Advancement of Science and Technology Health Research Award (2020-2023), NSF CAREER Award (2048130), and National Institutes of Health grants. His honors include Scialog Fellow (2021), University of Oklahoma Junior Faculty Fellowship Program Awards (2018, 2019), Outstanding Faculty Teacher (OU SBME, 2022), NIH Early Career Reviewer Program Participant (2019), and Best Poster Award at EUROPT(R)ODE XI (2012). He serves on the editorial board of European Journal of Pharmaceutics and Biopharmaceutics since 2019 and has co-chaired sessions at conferences such as BMES 2019 and ACS National Meeting 2018. His scholarship has garnered thousands of citations, influencing nanomedicine and nanoparticle delivery fields.
