About Stefan

Professor Stefan Williams is a Professor of Marine Robotics at the University of Sydney's Australian Centre for Field Robotics within the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering. He earned his PhD from the University of Sydney in 2001 with a thesis titled 'Efficient solutions to autonomous mapping and navigation problems' and a BASc from the University of Waterloo in 1997. Williams previously served as Head of the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering from 2016 to 2021. He leads the Marine Systems group at the Australian Centre for Field Robotics, directing research on autonomous underwater vehicles, simultaneous localization and mapping, marine imaging, artificial intelligence for oceanographic applications, and benthic habitat monitoring. His work supports major initiatives such as the Integrated Marine Observing System and collaborations with the Schmidt Ocean Institute for deep-sea exploration and mapping.

Williams' contributions have garnered over 11,900 citations according to Google Scholar, reflecting his influence in marine robotics and related fields. Notable outputs include publications on BioTIME: A database of biodiversity time series for the Anthropocene and advancements in AUV-based surveys.
