Steph Bennington completed a Master of Science degree at the University of Otago in 2020, with a thesis on the habitat use of bottlenose dolphins. She subsequently pursued doctoral research at the same institution in the Department of Marine Science, focusing on the recovery potential of Hector's dolphin. Bennington received the inaugural Marks' Ecology Award as a Marine Science PhD candidate. Her work has contributed to publications on marine mammal ecology and conservation, including studies involving multi-event modeling and species distribution models. She has also served as a trustee for the Whale and Dolphin Trust. Bennington is currently a postdoctoral scholar at Oregon State University.
