Stephanie Gilley, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, Section of Nutrition, at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus School of Medicine, where she also serves as Associate Fellowship Director for the Nutrition Fellowship. She received her BA from Middlebury College and earned both her MD and PhD from Tufts University School of Medicine in 2015. Gilley completed her pediatric residency at the University of Colorado in 2018 and a fellowship in Nutrition and Obesity Medicine at Children's Hospital Colorado in 2020. She was a Nutrition T32 Fellow from July 2020 to June 2022 and practices clinically at the Children’s Hospital Colorado Nutrition Clinic.
Dr. Gilley's research aims to enhance lifelong health by optimizing nutrition during infancy and early childhood. Her investigations include the effects of fetal growth restriction on metabolic health and gut microbiome composition, early iron exposure's impact on infant gut microbiota and inflammation, predictors and modifiers of rapid infant weight gain, and sex differences in high-fat diet responses following intrauterine growth restriction. She has obtained principal investigator funding from the NIH K08 award (2025-2030), Colorado NORC Pilot and Feasibility Awards (2022, 2024), Colorado Children’s Health Research Institute, Ludeman Family Center for Women's Health Research (2021-2022), and others. Key publications encompass "Association of Maternal BMI and Rapid Infant Weight Gain With Childhood Body Size and Composition" (Pediatrics, 2023), "Metabolic and fecal microbial changes in adult fetal growth restricted mice" (Pediatric Research, 2024), "Calorie restriction during gestation impacts maternal and offspring fecal microbiome in mice" (Frontiers in Endocrinology, 2024), and "Breastfeeding for the Re-Hospitalized Infant" (Hospital Pediatrics, 2025). Her contributions have been recognized with the 2022 Outstanding MD Instructor/Fellow Award from the Colorado Nutrition Obesity Research Center, Provider of the Month from Children’s Hospital Colorado (2022), 2022 Fellows’ Clinical Research Award from the Society for Pediatric Research, and 2024 Outstanding Basic Science Paper Award from the Perinatal Research Society.
