Dr Stephanie Mathieson is a Senior Research Fellow at The University of Sydney. Her research programme focuses on strategically evaluating interventions for musculoskeletal pain. She is affiliated with the Institute for Musculoskeletal Health and the Sydney Pharmacy School within the Faculty of Medicine and Health.
Mathieson holds a PhD and has contributed to numerous studies on low back pain, sciatica, and related conditions. Notable among her work is the 2017 publication in the New England Journal of Medicine titled 'Trial of pregabalin for acute and chronic sciatica.' She has co-authored systematic reviews and meta-analyses examining anticonvulsants for low back pain and lumbar radicular pain, opioid analgesia for acute low back pain and neck pain, the prevalence of opioid use in chronic noncancer pain, and deprescribing opioids in chronic non-cancer pain. Additional publications address neuropathic pain screening questionnaires, combination drug therapy for low back pain and sciatica, and barriers to opioid deprescribing in primary care. Her research outputs also include analyses of global disease burden and guidelines for systematic reviews in musculoskeletal rehabilitation fields.
