About Stephanie

Honorary Professor Stephanie Short holds a chair in Medical Sociology within the Sydney School of Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney, to which she was appointed in 2009. She served as Associate Dean (Postgraduate) from 2009 onwards in that role. Her academic qualifications include a Diploma in Physiotherapy (Dip(Phty)) from Cumberland College of Health Sciences, a Bachelor of Arts with first class honours (BA(Hons)) from the University of New South Wales, graduating in 1983, a Master of Science in Economics (MSc(Econ)) from the London School of Economics, and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Sociology. With an initial clinical background as a registered physiotherapist, Short joined the University of Sydney Faculty of Health Sciences in 1974, developing a long-standing career focused on health sociology, policy analysis, and academic management.

Professor Short's research specializations encompass health sociology, health workforce governance and policy, medical professional groups, and international health workforce migration. Her scholarly contributions have earned over 3,500 citations according to Google Scholar. Notable publications include the book 'Health Care and Public Policy: An Australian Analysis' co-authored with George Palmer (Macmillan Education), editorial contributions to 'Health Workforce Governance: Improved Access, Good Practice' (2012), and peer-reviewed articles such as 'The Future Health Workforce: Integrated Solutions and Models of Care' (International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 2021), 'Source country perceptions, experiences, and recommendations regarding health workforce migration: a case study from the Philippines' (Human Resources for Health, 2014), and 'Dental diaspora: oral health care attitudes and experiences in culturally and linguistically diverse mothers in Australia' (BMC Health Services Research, 2022). She has acted as Senior Advisor to the World Health Organization on the design, reform, and implementation of health practitioner regulation across multiple countries and served on the board of the International Sociological Association Research Committee on Sociology of Professional Groups. A Fellow of the Australasian College of Health Service Management (FCHSM, CHE), Short has been invited to teach her areas of expertise at over twenty universities worldwide and holds non-executive directorships in health organizations.
