About Stephen

Stephen Krashen is an Emeritus Professor of Education at the University of Southern California's Rossier School of Education. He completed his Ph.D. in Linguistics at the University of California, Los Angeles in 1972. Krashen's research specializations encompass bilingual education, neurolinguistics, second language acquisition, and literacy. He has authored more than 525 articles and books in these areas, establishing himself as a prolific scholar in language education.

Key publications include Principles and Practice in Second Language Acquisition (1982), The Input Hypothesis: Issues and Implications (1985), Second Language Acquisition and Second Language Learning (1981), The Natural Approach (1983), Language Two (1982), The Power of Reading: Insights from the Research (2004), Explorations in Language Acquisition and Use (2003), and We Acquire Vocabulary and Spelling by Reading: Additional Evidence for the Input Hypothesis (1989). These works have amassed tens of thousands of citations on Google Scholar, reflecting their extensive reach within academia. Krashen has received numerous honors for his contributions, including the Mildenberger Award in 1982 for Second Language Acquisition and Second Language Learning, the Pimsleur Award in 1985 from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages for the best published article, the Dorothy C. McKenzie Award for Distinguished Contribution to the Field of Children’s Literature from the Children’s Literature Council of Southern California, an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Lewis and Clark College in Portland in 2011, and the Kenneth S. Goodman In Defense of Good Teaching Award from the College of Education at the University of Arizona in 2019.
