Dr. Steve Smalt serves as Director of the School of Accountancy and Associate Professor of Accounting & Information Systems in the Michael J. Coles College of Business at Kennesaw State University. A veteran educator with over four decades of experience, he joined the KSU faculty in 1983 and has taught courses in accounting, auditing, international accounting, and financial information systems for more than 30 years. Prior to his current leadership role, Smalt held the position of interim director of the School of Accountancy starting in December 2017, following a nationwide search that led to his appointment as full-time director in June 2018. Before KSU, he was a faculty member at Columbus State University and held a staff position at the University of Florida. Smalt earned his PhD from the Graduate College of Union Institute and University, a BBA from Columbus State University, and completed other studies at the University of Florida. He is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
Smalt's scholarly contributions include the peer-reviewed article 'The Impact of an Accounting Simulation on Performance and Perception in Accounting Courses,' published in 2013 in the Journal of Executive Education co-authored with Gary L. Selden, which explores simulation-based learning in accounting education. He also authored 'A Case for Banking Oversight Reform in Crisis Mitigation' and contributed to 'How Nonfinancial Performance Measures Are Used' in 1998 alongside Bonnie P. Stivers, Teresa Joyce Covin, and Nancy Green Hall. His teaching excellence has been recognized with the Distinguished Graduate Teaching Award, Outstanding Faculty Cohort 38 in October, and Graduate Faculty Honor at Graduation in May. As director, Smalt oversees the School of Accountancy, contributing to its recognition in global rankings for accounting research output, where KSU placed 61st worldwide and second in Georgia.
