About Steve

Professor Steve Vucic is the Northcott Chair of Neurology and Director of the Brain and Nerve Research Centre at Concord Clinical School, Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Sydney. He earned his MBBS with First Class Honours from the University of Sydney in 1996, completed a PhD at the University of New South Wales from 2005 to 2008 titled "Pathophysiology of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis," and holds Fellowships including FRACP. He undertook neurophysiology and neuromuscular fellowships at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School from 2002 to 2005. Following completion of neurology training in 2005, Vucic was appointed staff specialist in neurology and Director of Neurophysiology at Westmead Hospital in 2008, alongside Senior Lecturer at the University of Sydney. He advanced to Associate Professor in 2010 and Professor of Medicine in 2014.

A prominent clinical academic, Professor Vucic specializes in neurodegenerative disorders, with pioneering research identifying cortical hyperexcitability as an early initiating mechanism in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), resolving longstanding questions on disease onset. His work encompasses frontotemporal dementia, progressive multiple sclerosis, and employs threshold tracking transcranial magnetic stimulation techniques. Vucic has published over 235 peer-reviewed articles in leading journals including The Lancet, Brain, Nature Genetics, and JAMA Neurology, garnering more than 10,000 citations, an H-index of 43, and i10-index of 132. Key publications include "Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis" (2011, 3579 citations), contributions to the IST-3 stroke trial (2012), and multiple sclerosis genomic studies (2013, 2019). He co-authored the textbook "Practical Approach to Electromyography" with Harvard collaborators. Awards include the Gottschalk Medal from the Australian Academy of Science (2016) for early-career biomedical research excellence, Eric Susman Prize from the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (2017), and election as Fellow of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences. His research has attracted substantial funding, international invitations, and media recognition.
