Dr. Steven Naoum is a Senior Lecturer in Orthodontics at the University of Western Australia Dental School in the Oral Developmental and Behavioural Sciences discipline. He earned his Bachelor of Dental Science (BDSc) from UWA in 2001. In 2007, he completed a Graduate Diploma in Divinity (GDDiv) through the Australian College of Theology in Sydney. From 2008 to 2014, he held a full-time academic appointment in the Faculty of Dentistry, Department of Restorative Dentistry at the University of Sydney, serving also as Oral Health Lead at the Poche Centre for Indigenous Health, during which time he completed his PhD on the benefits and effectiveness of fluoride-releasing resin composites. He returned to Perth in 2014 for specialist orthodontic training, obtaining his Doctor of Clinical Dentistry in Orthodontics (DClinDent Ortho) from UWA in 2016. Appointed Senior Lecturer at UWA Dental School in 2018, he practices clinically as a registered Specialist Orthodontist certified by the Australasian Orthodontic Board at the Oral Health Centre of Western Australia and in private practice.
Dr. Naoum's research specializations include orthodontics, dental materials, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health. Key publications feature 'The predictability of tooth movement with clear aligner systems' (2026, Seminars in Orthodontics), 'Aesthetic Preferences for Replacement of Missing Maxillary Lateral Incisors: A Comparison of Canine Substitution, Implants and Resin-Bonded Bridges Among Australian Dental Professionals and Laypeople' (2025, Australian Dental Journal), 'Effect of Orthognathic Surgery On Pulp Blood Flow and Pulp Sensibility: A Prospective Control Trial' (2024, Journal of Endodontics), 'Orthodontists’ perception and attitude toward accelerated orthodontic treatments in Australia' (2024, Australasian Orthodontic Journal), and 'The use of functional appliances for class II malocclusions: a nation-wide cross-sectional survey of orthodontists in Australia' (2024, Australasian Orthodontic Journal). He received the ICD Syd Dobbin AM Research Grant in 2019 with collaborators. Dr. Naoum serves as current state councillor for the Australian Society of Orthodontists and as a member of its National committee for the Foundation for Research and Education.
